She placed the shopping bag onto the backseat and walked towards the deli. Picking snacks for the meeting was not easy. She reached for the chocolate biscuits but remembered the canned cookie dough she had already bought. She grabbed cheese sticks and strolled through the cool shop. Minutes later she had chosen more items and headed for the line to pay. Her shoulders dropped when she saw the queue. It was warm near the doors. She found a tissue in her bag and wiped away the perspiration running down her neck. She fanned her face and recalled her granny’s warnings about the end of the world. “There’ll be drastic temperature changes! People will be violent…” she had said. ‘Granny was always ready for a good doom and gloom story,’ she thought, but an uneasiness settled over her. On cue, a group of shouting kids stormed down the road. Her pulse quickened. She paid and walked back to her car. The heat hit her like a tonne of bricks. She noticed the car guard watching her as she slid into the driver’s seat. She wiped sweat from her brow with an impulsive move of her arm and turned the key in the ignition. A loud bang sounded, and something hit the back of her head. “Armageddon,” she trembled. “It has begun.” She touched the back of her head. A soft, warm substance clung to her fingers. Her breathing became shallow. “I’ve been shot,” she cried, slumping forward. Her head hit the steering wheel; the engine was still running. A knock at the window made her jump. “The guard,” she whispered. Tears and sweat stung her eyes. He pulled the door open. “Are you okay? These cans of cookie dough were in the sun too long. It popped right open,” he chuckled. “Happened to my wife once. She had to soak her hair for the longest time to get it out!” She felt for the paste-like mass in her hair again and smelled it. “Cookie dough.” A laugh escaped her lips. Not Armageddon. Thank you for your comment, Julian 😄 I watched a couple of videos online of the cans popping open in the heat. The smaller cans tended to be propelled into the air more so than the bigger cans. Perhaps because of the lighter weight 🤷‍♀️ It was very interesting to see. ---

Hello, I thought this was a fun and imaginative story. I enjoyed being fooled at the end. I once had bags of ketchup chips pop in my carry-on bag from Canada back to the US! I since learned to use a safety-pin to poke the tiniest hole into each bag. ---

Sorry for this very late reply to your question Marianna. Yes they made a popping sound, it startled me ! I had a few bags of ketchup chips to bring back for family from Canada. This was years ago. My carry on bag was small filled with delicious candy and those chips under the seat. Airplane noise blocked out the sound, so it wasn’t that loud but I checked my bag and the bags were deflated as a result. I have since learned to stick a pin in the bag to keep this from happening again. ---
