Gymnopedie number 1 by Eric Satie - performed by Tiffany Poon

* * *

_ **Gymnopédies** _ is a set of three atmospheric solo piano pieces composed by **Erik Satie** in 1888\*\*.

**Composer Overview**

- **Name** : Erik Satie (born Éric Alfred Leslie Satie).
- **Identity** : French avant-garde composer, pianist, and eccentric cabaret performer.
- **Legacy** : Pioneer of modern ambient music, minimalism, and repetitive structure.
- **Personality** : Famously eccentric; he wore identical velvet suits, ate only white food, and founded his own one-man religion.
- **Circle** : Heavily influenced and championed by close contemporaries like Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.

**Composer Dates**

- **Birth** : May 17, 1866.
- **Death** : July 1, 1925 (at age 59 from cirrhosis of the liver).

**Musical Period**

- **Era** : Late Romantic / Early Modern Era.

- **Stylistic Movement** : Avant-garde and Impressionism precursor. Satie explicitly rejected the heavy, dramatic, and lush textures of 19th-century Romanticism, choosing instead to strip away musical pretentiousness.

**Brief Description of the Pieces**

- **The Structure** : The _Trois Gymnopédies_ consist of three short, separate movements sharing a common structure in 3/4 time.

- **The Sound** : Characterized by a slow, wandering melody over a gentle, alternating bass note and chord accompaniment. They rely on mild, unresolved chords to create an ethereal atmosphere.

- **The Mood** : Stately, serene, melancholic, and deeply dreamy.

I really enjoyed this performance. Tempo is very important in Gymnopedie, and this pianist set the perfect tempo and kept it steady all the way through.

This piece makes me feel so calm that I could even catch the small details in my environment, and it made me more aware of the sounds around me. I felt a sense of “oneness” between the music and the world around me.

It is very relaxing. I can use it to fall asleep. Well performed.
