Josh and Jenny, Changing - by Julie Harris

https://Voice.club - Jenny slammed the suitcase shut, staring at the empty key hook.

“Wanna see something gorgeous?” Josh gestured toward his new painting.

“No, I don’t! Where are my keys?” Jenny was furious.

“We decided – no more cars.” Josh’s calm voice was like waving a red flag at a bull. Jenny stomped the floor and snorted.

“You decided. Blast that dreamy-eyed Bike for a Green World group. No job, no car. You love giving up things? Fine. Try this one – no wife.” Jenny stared daggers at her smiling husband.

As she whirled away, she almost bumped into his canvas.
“Careful, it’s not quite dry.” Josh welcomed her to take a look.

Almost in spite of herself, Jenny studied the canvas. She couldn’t help appreciating the joyful blend of colors, the shadow of the bicycle reflecting on the curved road. She stood in silence for quite some time, her rage melting away as she remembered simpler times. Bike rides, picnics in the park, hours spent admiring flowering trees. Josh would paint, she would write poems and stories. Where had that life gone? When had she become addicted to life in the fast lane, moving up the corporate ladder, growling and grumbling through rush hour traffic twice a day?

“Oh Josh!” Jenny’s spine began to tingle. She silently said goodbye to her life as a well-paid, exalted paper pusher and hello to a new life of exciting uncertainty.

“This is the face of the new BGW campaign, Jen. We have a powerful message to share. We’re gonna save the planet! Oh, and they hired me to be the Marketing Manager.” As he handed her his first paycheck, her eyes widened.

“That’s gorgeous, alright!” Suddenly Jenny was in his arms, laughing and crying.

“One more surprise.” Josh grabbed her hands and pulled her outside.

A new eBike, just her size, in her favorite color.

“Race you to the park!” Jenny shouted.

Nice one, Julie. Your presentation of using eBikes rather than cars can lessen the pollution and perhaps can save the world.

Happy to hear that there are people leaving the rat race and choosing a simple natural lifestyle.
