Armageddon - by Julian Kern

https://Voice-club - James Hover knelt by the shrine at the top of the hill. The simple stone had an inscription: “To my Meg, who took her life on this hill. We will never forget the evil done to you.” Jay carefully placed a bunch of freesias, her favourite flower, at its base.

“I’m sorry, Meg, Anthony’s out of prison, and he’s coming back to the estate. It’s time for a reckoning.”

Antony Christophers had been Jay’s nemesis growing up. He ran a gang who terrorised the neighbourhood with violence and extortion. The police seemed unable to stop it, and it was Jay who had stood up to him, culminating in Christopher’s arrest and a custodial sentence. From inside prison, Antony planned his retribution. He ordered the abduction and brutal assault of Jay’s girlfriend, leaving her close to death. She had never really recovered, and no one had been brought to justice, but Jay knew who was responsible, even if he had no proof. And as for Meg, she couldn’t live with the horror of the assault and had ended her life on the same hill where Jay now wept.

Once he had returned to his old hunting grounds, it didn’t take long for Antony to gather his old gang around him, the King brothers, and his two henchmen, nicknamed Gog and Magog. It was time for the showdown, and the location chosen by Jay was on top of Meg’s hill.

Jay stood by the shrine as Antony, the three King brothers and Gog and Magog approached, carrying knives and axes, the silver moon glistening off the blades of their weapons.

"Well, what do we have here, boys?” sneered Christophers. “Little Jay Hover. All alone and without any weapons. Just like a lamb to the slaughter.” As Antony raised his axe, Jay looked first at Meg’s shrine before raising his hands to the heavens. There was a deep clap, like thunder, and a blinding flash of light that arced down from the sky. In front of Jay all that remained were six smoking piles of ash.

Wow, Julian, that was epical!
I felt a touch of the Crow in the setting, with a finale almost lovecraftian, loved it!

I loved it, especially the ending. And I wish there were more parts to this story.
