Dialog by the River - by Thompson Emate

https://Voice.club - He sat by the river in the evening light, wishing his mind could be as tranquil as the water before him. He was tired of the constant struggle against the unseen.

“Oh, God, can I tell you how I feel? I’m torn,” he thought.

“Hey! What are you doing sitting there all alone?” a voice called out.

He turned around in surprise.

“How did you know someone was here?” he asked.

“Sometimes I come here to reflect on the day. Other times I seek answers to the issues that trouble my mind,” the man replied as he sat beside him.

“Oh, so we’re in the same boat,” he said, a flash of understanding crossing his face.

“Yes, lad, we might be in the same boat, but we’re not on the same page. We may share the boat but not share the same view,” the man said.

He looked at the man, speechless.

The man nodded and continued, “The essence of us is the same as the essence of the sun.”

“The sun!” the lad exclaimed.

“Yes. Do you know what happens to the sun when it retreats to its chamber?”

“No, I don’t think so.”

“It’s a mystery, and so are we.”

“Mystery,” he whispered.

“Yes, we are creations wrapped in mystery. There’s something about us that is deep and unwritten. Sometimes we find ourselves enmeshed in darkness, which we need to seek light to understand.”

“I just wish that one day all we need to know will be written,” the lad said, looking down.

“I wish that too. But even though it’s not all written, you can still find solace in what you do know.”

“Solace amidst so much entanglement?”

“The entanglement should be your driving force. It should be your story, your creative push. Light can penetrate through the stubborn night.”

The lad bowed his head as tears welled in his eyes.

“Please, who are you?” he asked.

“I’m a stranger and a friend,” the man replied.

He lifted his head and looked toward the spot where the man had been sitting, but he was gone.

What a wonderful story, Thompson. I especially liked this paragraph:

“The entanglement should be your driving force. It should be your story, your creative push. Light can penetrate through the stubborn night.”

This story has so much depth and spirituality. I always look forward to your stories!

I truly like the thought “entanglement should be your driving force”. We grow through our adversities as your protagonists has found out. I enjoyed reading your story, reenforcing our need for light to guide us through darkness.

Thompson, you have a magical way with words. I really enjoyed reading the stranger’s wise words and philosophy on life. Rather than give up and be melancholy, we should fight through our problems!

A real presence or a figment of the boy’s imagination? Intriguing but not important as the dialogue revealing truths that maybe he already knew deep down… A good story gives food for reflection and yours really does, well done!
