The Importance of Good Newspaper Reporting - by Susan Giles

https://Voice.club - Only three pieces of information are to come her way, via newspaper articles. A newspaper reporter, Sia lives by the five necessary parts of any good article: who, what, where, and when.

Samuel is the “who”. They date for two years, then he suddenly leaves her to make his fortune. Working for an unscrupulous man causes Samuel to be cautious. On their last night, he tells Sia, “I’ll leave clues in three separate newspaper articles; to assure no one else intercepts and uses these messages to find me. They’ll be in clue form, which only you and I can interpret.”

In June, Sia spends all her extra time in the park where she and Samuel met. One day, she sees a newspaper lying on a park bench. Curious, since it is not a newspaper with which she is familiar, Sia picks it up to read. A Page 2 headline reads, “Man Loses Heart and Best Friend”. The article continues, saying a heartbroken gentleman regrets leaving his sweetheart behind and wants her to join him. The “What”.

The article has no definite conclusion, but Sia knows what the conclusion will be. She waits patiently for the next article which will lead her to Sam.

In July, a line appears in the Classified Section of the Phoenix News stating, “What is Ben Franklin’s favorite candy bar?”

Sia laughs upon reading this. Hershey, of course! She and Samuel had shared many a Hershey Kiss during their courtship. The question of “Where?” is now answered.

In August an article appears in the same paper. “Local Artist Sylvia Samson will be reading from her recently published third novel, Rendezvous at Noon at Phoenix Library on Friday, August 20. Subsequent readings will be held in St. Louis, Atlanta, and Richmond, ending in Hershey, Pa on September 23.”

Sam is one of the few people who knows Sia is short for Sylvia. The “When”.

In September, a glowing Sia boards a plane and flies breathlessly to Hershey and her future.

Susan, this was so much fun! I love the clues and the way they mean something only for the lovers themselves. We’re rooting for them all the way through! The framework of newspaper reporting is a great structure, too. Loved this story!

Susan, I enjoyed your ingenious story of puzzles. My question is - is Sam still worthy of her love? After all he chose money and a corrupt employer.

Ah, but he turned his back on these and instead embraced a life of love.

I have always enjoyed reading stories which include clues to help the reader solve the puzzle on their own. Then I discovered it’s difficult to write clues when one already knows the answer! One can’t be too obvious or too oblique. Thanks for reading and enjoying my story. It lets me know I was successful in this attempt.

This is such a brilliant romantic story filled with clues. But I don’t think Sam is worthy of Sia’s love.
