Yesterday's Playground - by Marianna Pieterse

https://Voice.club - The water from the splash pool was refreshing. The children jumped in, foiling her plan to submerge herself into the water slowly.

Her mind drifted to a time when she was sitting in a blow-up pool in the middle of the dam behind the farmhouse. Unable to swim to shore, she’d watched as her brother had tried to outswim the leeches. She couldn’t remember how she had gotten out, but she survived to tell the tale.

She smiled as their fox terrier jumped into the pool to join in the fun. A tiny splash emerged. Glee spread over his face like he hit the jackpot.

The splash was minute compared to the time when their St. Bernard had been pushed into the dam with the leeches. Her uncle had thought it would be funny. The dog, unphased by the dive, had climbed out, walked up to the culprit, and shook the water from his coat. He had left her uncle soaking wet. A smug look of victory had reflected on the dog’s face.

The kids grabbed the volleyball set.

She remembered the time she had played cowboys and crooks with her brother. They had created dens built with wooden crates and fowl wire. He was good at building things… and taking things apart. Like the radio she’d been given for Christmas that one year. He had to see how it was put together. He couldn’t use his. He needed one intact to see where all the screws and parts go when putting it back together. It never worked again.

They moved to the city when she was twelve. Sleep wouldn’t come at night. The city’s noise was a constant reminder of the comfort of the country they left behind. A comfort where modern toys and peer pressure were things that they only read about in magazines.

How she longed for the comfort of their country home.

A sweet tale of childhood enjoying a simple carefree life.

Wow! What a nice voiceover, Marianna. And oh! I love the longing for the comfort of their country home. A country home is really full of calmness and healing; it is way better than a noisy city. I always choose to live in a country home, simple but full of life. Listening to the chirping of birds, the flowing of the water in the creek, and the noise from the insects and frogs at night and interacting with nature is truly a treasure.

Thank you so much for your comment, Margarida. I’m glad you liked it :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Thank you for your kind comment, Lotchie  I totally agree with you about preferring a country home to the city noise :revolving_hearts:

You’re most welcome, Marianna. Yes. Country home is a treasure for me.

Marianna, your story really captures the simplicity of childhood in the country, so much healthier for growing up without smartphones. It expresses real enjoyment in family memories of life outdoors.

Thank you so much for your comment, Julian. Life outdoors is so rewarding, and I agree, so much healthier than just having smartphones to keep us / children busy.
