Greetings Friends - One of our talented new writers - @EileenCruise - submitted an excellent essay on our recent prompt “Cheating” which we wanted to share with everyone below.
Making a difference - by Eileen Cruise
Making a difference:
Cheating is endemic nowadays. Why? Is it more thrilling because it’s secretive, or is the thrill increased with the risk of being found out? What benefit do we gain from cheating if our conscience doesn’t allow us to enjoy those benefits?
In social media, there are daily reports of who’s cheating on who. Is it the thrill of the chase? And when it’s exposed, is it then undesirable? Will the cheating stop when there’s no thrill?
People often cheat on their taxes. The fine line between avoidance and evasion borders on cheating. Some say its okay to cheat the taxman, especially as the Tax Revenue is often pilfered and frittered away by Government officials who have a duty to make our country work to the betterment of society, and instead, syphon off funds sorely needed in poorer communities. They neglect their public when embezzling funds for their own purposes. Services are cut. State Clinics and hospitals suffer when medical staff are overworked and underpaid, a sorry state of affairs for those who rely on them, all because of greed.
When cheating in school exams happens it is counter-productive, as children are promoted to higher grades when they’re not ready, spoiling their chances of achieving worthwhile educations. The cheater continues in ignorance. In Tertiary Education cheating can have serious consequences, especially when an academic or medical qualification is gained allowing them to practice their profession without being properly trained.
I’m guilty of cheating. I don’t always obey traffic rules, not coming to a full STOP when roads are quiet. At night I treat red lights as yield signs, feeling vulnerable as a woman driver, which doesn’t excuse my actions.
My conclusion is that cheating is part of the moral decline of society, and if we tolerate it, does our lack of outcry add to the problem, sending the message to younger generations that cheating is okay? Are we prepared to stand up and speak out against cheating, and make a meaningful difference to future generations? I hope the answer is YES!
