If Music Be the Food of Love - by Susan Giles

https://Voice.club - Sabrina choses their lunch location based on the cafe’s name: Feed the Senses, Feed the Soul.

“I’ll have a #44, please,” Sabrina says, pointing to the menu, “and a #17 for my companion.”

“Ah! The ‘Cheeseburger in Paradise’ for the lady and ‘We Shall Meet (Meat) on That Beautiful Shore’ for the gentleman.”

“Yes, thank you. And we would each like the ‘It isn’t Easy Being Green’ tossed salad and the ‘Strawberry Fields’/‘Blueberry Hill’ fruit medley.”

“Very good. And would you like to start with an appetizer? Possibly ‘Salt Peanuts’ by Dizzy Gillespie or a bowl of ‘Oats, Peas, Beans, and Barley’ soup?”

“The soup sounds perfect. Also, could you please bring the complimentary ‘Bread and Butter’ with ‘A Taste of Honey’? Oh, and to drink I’ll take a glass of ‘Old Dogs, Children, and Watermelon Wine’. Fredrick, which beverage would you like?”

“I think I would like to ‘Put the Lime in the Coconut’ and drink it all up.”

“Very good.” The waiter bows and takes their order to the kitchen.

Sabrina glances down at the dessert menu.

“Look, Fredrick, at our dessert choices!” ‘American Pie’, the Jelly Roll Morton jazz assortment, or Danny Kay’s ‘Lovely Bunch of Coconut’ pie."

Fredrick smiles. “Let’s just stay away from ‘The Worst Pies in London’.”

This is hilarious, Susan! I especially like “Put the Lime in the Coconut” and drink it all up. I can’t remember who sang that but I can just hear it in my head! I found a version of “The Worst Pies in London”, but I couldn’t understand the words. I’ll have to look that one up. I also have never heard “Old Dogs, Children, and Watermelon Wine”. What a title for a song!

You must have had a lot of fun writing this one!!

Thank you for reading and commenting on my story. I did have a lot of fun both researching (with some help) and then writing up this story. I’m not sure if any of these can be considered my “favorite” songs, but they are all ones that end up running through my mind at one time or another. Rather than actually living the songs, I chose instead to enjoy them vicariously through this story. Oh, were there really such a restaurant!

This is exceptional. You make me research a lot too. But what I loved the most is “A Taste of Honey” by Peggy Lee. Your work is truly impressive.
