@MusicExchange-VIP

Greetings - Thanks to everyone for contributing in our great Zoom session today!

I personally learned a great deal about cinematic and film music, and now I am very motivated to study film scoring and composition!

@SharonSpivak @SebastianOmelkov @RobinHeuer @MarcusJones @LoganEvans -
It was a pleasure to meet the new faces and also to see the long-time members. Hopefully, each of you can benefit from the energy, power, and possibilities of our growing artist community.

You are welcome to continue today’s conversation, so please feel free to reply to this topic with any follow up questions, feedback, or general comments for @MylesSpencer

We hope to see everyone next month as we continue to explore Cinematic Music Part II.

Feel free to explore Music Exchange here:

Thank you @MylesSpencer for a very exciting and informative session on Cinematic Music, and particularly the “leitmotif”. Your extensive research and the links you found are a wonderful point of reference. Don’t worry about covering all the different aspects of Cinematic Music in two 45 minute sessions - that’s the work of a lifetime! What you’ve done is given us some fascinating scenes to watch and learn from. It’s so nice to have this topic thread to review the links and ask questions.

Last night I watched the last link, Duel of the Fates with Beethoven, in its entirety. I just loved it! There’s something about that music that lends such depth and dignity to the entire story. As Chris said, that same music was used in the climax of “The King’s Speech”, another cinematic triumph, and has a gravitas and a sense of history.

Toward the end of our session Marcus posted a chat question that we didn’t have time to address. Marcus, would you like to post your question here for Myles to answer?

I was so thrilled to have my childhood friend @RobinHeuer join us. It’s the first time she and I have “seen” each other in over 60 years! It was also a delight to welcome @SharonSpivak @SebastianOmelkov and @MarcusJones for the first time. I’m glad that @AnnikaJoshi could join us right before leaving for her new life, as a college freshman at Stanford. Annika, I hope you’ll continue to be part of our team! California’s not that far away! And most of all, thanks to my incredible students and musical family @RaphaelMouawad @NeilAwasthi @LoganEvans @Rula for always being part of these MusicExchange team.

I hope you will all feel free to continue the discussion on this thread, and of course return for more on the Second Saturday of September - September 14th at noon.

Hello New Friends! I tried to enter the Discourse Session, but I had not yet been “approved.” My approval has now arrived, I’m happy to say. I’m glad they didn’t “kick me to the curb” as some non-musical riff-raff! :grin:

@MylesSpencer - I loved your presentation! My ear is always remarkably tuned to music, yet, I had not put any of your points together as I watched movies over the years. However, it’s the music to which I emotionally respond over and over.

There’s a movie called, The Holiday in which one of the characters, Myles, played by Jack Black, composes the cinematic music for films under the Direction of Cameran Diaz. During the film, he falls for a girl, Kate Winslet and writes a song for her telling her as he plays it, “…I only used the GOOD NOTES…” I love that line!
Thank you all for a warm welcome. I look forward to spending more time with you all. Sharon
