Sami sighs as she slowly closes the front door. Her dad’s voice echoes in her head as she drives away.
“You need a college degree! You’ll never make it as a musician! You’ll go nowhere!”
Her mother’s voice chimes in hopefully. “Call us if we can help in any way.”
Sami knows music as her protection, her fortitude. From singing nursery rhymes under her breath at 3 to block out other children, to timidly playing guitar in the background while others dance and preen on stage, Sami lives a quiet, unassuming life, never wanting to be on show. She just wants to have music inside her.
What is inside, though, must come out. Writing music not only releases the feelings she has inside, it also helps her relate to others. Sami discovers the words she writes act as a catalyst for others. She writes the words; others share them with the world.
Gingi, Sami’s best friend in college, encourages. “Sami, I’ll sing your new song in the show, but only if you let me tell them you wrote it!”
Sami shakes her head with a smile. “No, Gingi, you just sing. It’s enough for me to hear my words aloud.”
The concert is held on a late spring evening. The sun sets behind the building, bringing a glow of purple and orange to the assembly as a breeze carries scent of honeysuckle and pulse of music across the courtyard.
The words of Sami’s song swell up inside, filling her with pure contentment and joy. As she silently sings along, she realizes this is what she wants.
“Mom, Dad,” Sami approaches her parents that evening with assurance in her voice. “A college degree is not for me. That door would close forever the thrill I get from songwriting. I’ll give college two years, then devote my time to writing.”
She now sits on a high coffeehouse stool, guitar in hand. Sami’s voice begins low, then soars as she sings of her future:
Breathe the clear air
Follow if you dare
Come now, explore
Your door to nowhere.
